The old town of Wejherowo

Welcome to the Kashubian capital

Wejherowo’s heart beats on the market square with the collegiate church and the town hall from the early 20th century. The “Hall of tradition and history of Wejherowo” in the town hall houses the Kashubian alphabet, which has been created with sgraffito. Sgraffito is a technique of wall décor, produced by applying of several layers of plaster or paint to a wall and then scratched out to a colourful pattern. In December you should visit the cozy Christmas market taking place on the market square. It is the occasion to see and buy typical Kashubian and Polish food and art.

Jakub Wejher’s heritage

The tower of the town hall holds a bell from 1649, a gift from the city founder Jakub Wejher (German: Jakob von Weiher, 1609-1657). A monument in the middle of the market is dedicated to the city founder. Visit the cozy pubs, breweries, bakery shops, summer gardens, and shops with regional delicacies gathered around the market place.

Monastery church of St. Anna

In Klasztorna Street, connecting the market square with the Majkowski Park, one of the oldest buildings of the city – the in 1650 for the Franciscan order built monastery church of St. Anna – is located. Inside you will find the wonderful image of the mother of God of  Wejherowo. The basement of the church houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Wejher family.  The exhibition also informs you about the organisation of Calvary celebrations and educational tasks of the church. In the crypt are the tombs of the Wejher family, and their successor – the family of Przebendowski.
